Queen Rania Meets UNICEF Ambassador Mia Farrow
(Office of Her Majesty, Press Department - Amman) Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan, UNICEF’s Eminent Advocate for Children, today met with internationally acclaimed actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow. Farrow, a committed humanitarian activist, was on her way to the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel to raise awareness about the humanitarian situation of children impacted by conflict in this region, including lack of basic services and protection from harm.
Her trip will include a two-day visit to Gaza, where she will visit aschool, a hospital and a family center, and will meet with families who have lost their homes in the recent fighting.
Farrow will also meet with children who have been detained in Israeli facilities and tour Jenin refugee camp. Mia Farrow has been UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since September 2000. As a powerful advocate for children, she campaigns tirelessly for their rights around the world, with a special focus on children impacted by armed conflict. In 2008, Time magazine named her one of the most influential people in the world.
Her Majesty Queen Rania became UNICEF’s First Eminent Advocate for Children in January 2007 and has long been an active supporter of UNICEF and its programmes in Jordan and around the world. She has accompanied UNICEF to earthquake zones in Pakistan, to learning centres in India, and to schools in Argentina, Brazil and Morocco to emphasize the importance of providing all children – especially girls – with quality education. At their meeting in Amman, the two UNICEF champions discussed Mia Farrow’s upcoming visit to the occupied Palestinian territory and the situation of children in the region. They also spoke about the role of international advocates in protecting children’s rights.
