(Office of Her Majesty, Press Department- Amman) - Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah and the wife of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, paid a visit to the Queen Rania Family and Child Center in Amman today. Part of Her Majesty’s Jordan River Foundation (JRF), the center offers a pioneering and innovative approach to the traditional Arab model of a community center, as well as providing integrated services and support to children and families.
The Queen and Mrs. Ban toured the center’s facilities and activities, including the Drama Workshop, the IT Lab, English language courses, the Interactive Library, and training for the Family Support Line volunteers.
Her Majesty and Mrs Ban also stopped by the Art Workshop at the center, where ‘The Power of Color’ program was taking place. Conducted with a group of mothers and their children, the program aims to foster communication and reinforce connections between mother and child, and targets girls between the ages of 7 and 9 and their mothers.
The activities and interventions implemented at the center revolve around children, youth, and family empowerment and respond to the direct needs of these target groups. The center also aims at educating and empowering children through the use of different “edutainment activities” to identify child abuse and equip the abused with the tools that help them protect themselves.
Additionally, mothers are also provided with different trainings to enhance their parenting skills and eliminate the use of violence as a mean of punishment.
Mrs. Ban is in Amman accompanying her husband, UN Secretary General, Ban-Ki Moon on a short visit to the Kingdom where he met with His Majesty King Abdullah II and senior officials.
